Many of us will look nervously at the clock that counts until 2030, and the proposed prohibition of the government on the sale of new gasoline or diesel cars. How much does an electric car cost? £ 20,000? £ 30,000? What about £ 900?

It requires a little training, and some skills with a key and a MIG welder, but in theory you could, for example, have an electrically driven BMW in your driveway for less than £ 1,000. The company behind the scheme is called New Electric, a Dutch-Irish company whose primary industrial task converts large company aircraft into electric electricity.

However, it has a spur, based in Arklow, in County Wicklow, just south of Dublin. Here the emphasis is on large fleets or company limit, but on converting perfectly good gasoline or diesel cars, which can be canceled differently to electric current.

“When we started this, in 2008, it was all tailor -made. Every car we did was when starting again, “explains Kevin Sharpe from New Electric. “Now it comes to the point where it will be a Bolt-in solution for many vehicles. We want to be at the point where it is like a gigantic Meccano kit. That is where we go, because if we want to do this on a scale, we have to make it incredibly easy. “

Sharpe’s mission is to take good quality cars that, for whatever reason, are on their way to the scrap and they mate with batteries and engines of crashed or written off electric cars. Instead of having a Nissan leaf or a Renault Zoe in front, you could have a Lexus GS, or even a BMW 850i (only without the ‘i’ bit).

“It is originally from marine technology. It is quite normal to do in a marine environment, people always upgrade boats. It is not unusual to see a hull that is 100 years old with a new engine, and we wanted to do the same with cars, “says Sharpe.

New Electric can convert a car on your behalf or you learn how to do this. The lessons were booming, pre-lockdown and Sharpe has plans to restart them as soon as it is safe to do this.

“What we absolutely want to do is this one huge size,” says Sharpe. “There are so many cars that are deleted for their time. We recently bought a Lexus GS450 hybrid. It cost us £ 500. It is absolutely flawless. It was actually written off because it had a battery problem. But you can remove the internal combustion engine.

“You can then apply some magic to it, with which you can reuse the two engines that are in a hybrid powertrain, instead of the mere used normally, and suddenly you have a 300BHP fully electric powertrain. Then you can even go one Podium.

So how cheap can an up-cycled EV be? Well, there is of course the possibility to spend as much as you want, but Sharpe thinks you can get a converted car on the road for about half the price of a Hatchback from a family. “You can have a Bolt-in-Kit that would give you 200 miles solid reach and 250 kW of fast CCS chargers, for around £ 6,000. And don’t forget that Donor Lexus has bought it, only £ 500 on top. “

It doesn’t even have to be that expensive. One of the fans of New Electric, Damien Maguire, recently converted an old BMW 3 series into electric current for the princely sum of just under £ 900. To be honest, Maguire is a dab hand here and was therefore therefore able to do all the work itself, which saves any labor costs, but it still shows how potentially cost -effective your car converts to electric driving.
